How Whimsical uses RivalSense to monitor competitor product decisions
Whimsical uses RivalSense to monitor competitor updates, allowing them to stay informed without shifting focus from user needs.
Whimsical is a software company creating tools for real-time workspace collaboration. Their iterative workspace is loved by distributed Product and Design teams all around the world. Users love collaborating when creating mind maps, flowcharts, wireframes and docs inside Whimsical shared workspace.
My philosophy is to not actively look at what our competitors do, but to obsess over the motivations and needs of our users. To not obsessively keep tabs on what changes or improvements our competitors are shipping, and thus lose energy that we could have devoted to product work. That is why the RivalSense idea of AI-curated competitor news delivered to my inbox once a week seemed appealing. RivalSense will deliver the most important news to me, without me proactively spending time looking for them.

Whimsical pride themselves on focusing on the needs of their users
One of my favorite insights was the reaction of a competitor to an important regulatory event in our space. It helped me understand how they were thinking about it. We validated our own adjustment plans.

Whimsical team set up a RivalSense account tracking several companies that tend to be brought up in their sales conversations with clients. Every week they receive a newsletter with the most important insights on these companies.
I am not as interested in a particular feature our competitor could be launching in itself. I am interested in the assumptions behind their product change. What have our competitors uncovered about the real needs of users? Have they learned something that could be useful for Whimsical? When I see a RivalSense insight like that, I tend to share it with the rest of the executive team.
